Think of me as a scientific illustrator gone jeweler. I have been living and working on Cape Cod since 1976. In 1986 I began a career exclusively in gold and silver smithing as well teaching silver smithing at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham MA.
I owe this transition from printmaker and scientific illustrator with a Bachelor of Science in Invertebrate Zoology from Florida State University into metal smith to my mentor Melanie Kline of Sail On Silver Girl,
Eastham MA. I apprenticed with Melanie from 1983-86. During that time she introduced me to the techniques used to handcraft one-of-a-kind earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, pin or brooches using sterling silver and 14 KT gold. Later I included highly tarnish resistant Argentium silver as another metal I use to make the jewelry.
I was exhibit designer and scientific illustrator for the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History from 1976-1986 as well as freelance illustrator from Provincetown to Woods Hole MA.
I draw inspiration from the beauty of our natural world and remain vigilant for the inspiration that will become my next creation in gold or silver. Inspiration comes from the seashore and woodlands where you can often find me. Mermaids, horseshoe crabs, oysters, sea shells, sea glass, shore birds, dragonflies all find their way into these handcrafted gifts of wearable art.
People who have influenced my work include: Robert Finch, Don Schall and Bob Prescott during the years spent working at the CCMNH, Barbara and Stormy Mayo and Graham Geise of the Center for Coastal Studies; Rand Johnston, mentor and sculptor of Little Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas; Beth Brehmer, intaglio & aquatint printmaker; The Printmakers of Cape Cod; Monday Night Figure Drawing class at the CAC and Harry Holl, teacher extraordinaire.
All designs are fabricated in my studio on Cape Cod, from gold, highly tarnish resistant Argentium and sterling silver. I hope the hand wrought jewelry you select today become your heirlooms of the future.
